According to a recent MarketWatch report, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area is currently the best metro center for business in America. Despite several factors that would detract from the city, such as rather extreme winters, the Twin Cities beat out 2nd place Denver by 38 points. To those in search of Minneapolis jobs, area businesses doing well means a higher likelihood of offices requiring additions to already existing staff.
The report showed that Minneapolis’ business diversity assisted in keeping unemployment rates comparatively low. Instead of experiencing drastic lows when one industry or another received a hard hit, this diversity has enable Minneapolis jobs to steadily grow in number. With 32 Fortune 1000 companions and 15 S&P 500 firms in the city, area jobseekers have the opportunity to work for a variety of different big name companies which include United Health Group, General Mills, Best Buy Co. Inc, Northwest Airlines Corp., and Ameriprise Financial Inc. Another major company whose home office is located in the area is Target Corp, which is the number two discount retailer in America.
Despite the city’s top rankings, population growth and job growth statistics were only average when compared to several of the other 50 metropolises studied. Such news may seem uninspiring, but when viewed form the point of Minneapolis jobseekers, it may be a blessing in disguise. In a time when many large cities are experiencing such a booming population growth that job creation can not keep up, Minneapolis still maintains a balance not found in such areas. This means less competition for available jobs.
According to Todd Klingel, the chief executive of the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce, high city taxes do deter other large businesses from coming to the area. This could explain the only average growth of jobs in Minneapolis, but benefits many of the area’s citizens by supporting education. According to CNNMoney.com, “The region boasts one of the nation’s highest graduation rates for high school and college.” With such an educated workforce, businesses that do relocate to the area have a greater chance of finding quality employees. This can easily effect a business’ level of success.
