Video Resumes: Pros v. Cons
October 22nd, 2007

Video resumes are beginning to catch in the job search community. This can be seen on the internet more readily than anywhere else, where career related websites such as Monster.com have added pages for such on-screen applications.

More of a self-promoting commercial than a list of past work experiences, allow employers to see aspects of a person personality that don’t necessarily translate well to paper and ink, such as speaking skills and enthusiasm. Because of this, this new format is becoming increasingly popular in career fields that require advanced communication skills.

The difficultly lies in making a video resume look professional. Although plenty of software exists to assist in the editing process, many of these new digitalized applications come across as poorly done low budget films, with bad lightly and worse scripts.

Online Recruitment Insights
October 22nd, 2007

The internet has made it possible to connect job seekers with employers across towns, states, and even large bodies of water. Linking up companies who need new employees with workers who need jobs as if distance did not exist, online recruitment is increasingly more effective than placing an ad in the local classifieds. For this reason, more employers are turning to the web to connect them to individuals who are looking for a cubicle to call home.

August saw an increase in online recruitment in 21 of the 28 top metro centers throughout the US, according to a recent Monster press release on local employment indexes. As hiring slows down in the summer months, online job posting does to. As the calendar edges into fall, an upswing in employment can be noted.

The Entry Level Job Search
October 8th, 2007

The corporate ladder has rungs for a reason. Sure, people get lucky and find a way to skip one or two from time to time, but not usually in the beginning of their career. Climbing this ladder is what builds the character and business muscles needed to be able to shoulder the responsibilities that come with a bigger salary. The bottom rung may not seem as lucrative or as inspiring to the imagination as being the head of a major company might be, but entry level jobs provide the ability to hone to skills one will desperately need latter in their career.

Finding the right entry level job can often be difficult for a new graduate. Many individuals underestimate the necessity of networking. With a large portion of the world’s better positions never making it to job-search web sites or local papers, using one’s contacts for vital career information is extremely important.

Government Comes to Aid Minnesota’s Employment Woes
October 2nd, 2007

As recent as May 2007, the state of Minnesota had a strong and thriving economy and had added new jobs in Minneapolis and employment positions 20 out of 25 previous months. However, like other states in the past, Minnesota has now felt the devastating effects of Mother Nature and natural disasters along with suffering from loss of life when portions of the Department of Transportation’s infrastructure collapsed. Yet, surprisingly quick federal aid has been approved in an effort to rebuild the counties hit hardest by the devastating events.

The U.S. Department of Labor has significantly improved its processing time on emergency requests and respective funding to states in need in times of emergency in an effort to keep every state’s economy strong. According to the state of Minnesota, they are pleased that the federal government took a mere two weeks from initial time their request was submitted to approve emergency aid to seven flood-stricken counties in Southeast Minnesota. The federal emergency assistance approved a grant package, worth a total of $3 million dollars. This creates temporary employment positions for those hit hardest and displaced by the natural disaster in Minnesota. The grant is expected to create at least 300 temporary employment and entry level jobs that pay a maximum of $12,000 to each worker.
